Freeway access between Montague Street and Kings Way

• You will not be able to enter at Montague Street and exit at Kings Way
• You will not be able to enter at Kings Way and exit at Montague Street.

This is a permanent change to traffic conditions as part of the West Gate Freeway Upgrade.

Reason for these changed traffic conditions

The reason for this change is to reduce the amount of merging and weaving on the freeway.  There is a significant amount of traffic that uses Kings Way and this traffic needs to be separated from traffic entering and exiting the CityLink Tunnels. 

In the permanent arrangement, all Kings Way traffic (in both directions) will be separated from the main freeway traffic using barriers and will not join the freeway traffic until near Ingles Street overpass (west of Montague Street).

Short trips contribute to traffic flow disruptions and create congestion on the freeway.  You may have experienced this existing traffic merge if you have come out of the CityLink Tunnels and tried to exit at Montague Street - a difficult manoeuvre.

Alternatives to access Montague Street or Kings Way

If you are travelling to Kings Way and want to avoid tolls, you could:

• Use the Montague Street eastbound entry-ramp and exit at Power Street before the CityLink Tunnel (and then travel to Kings Way via Sturt Street) or
• Travel along Montague Street and Normanby Road, and enter Kings Way via Whiteman Street (near the Crown Casino) or
• Use the Cook Street eastbound entry-ramp and then exit at Kings Way.

And, if you are travelling to Montague Street, you could:

• Come from Kings Way, turn into Sturt Street, enter the freeway at Power Street and then exit at Montague Street or
• Exit Kings Way to Whiteman Street (near Crown Casino), travel along Normanby Road and Montague Street to access Lorimer Street or
• Use the Kings Way entry-ramp, drive past Montague Street and exit the freeway at Todd Road (near the Shell Service Centre).
