Motorists will this week start to see the first signs of temporary public safety barriers being installed on the West Gate Bridge, as part of measures to improve public safety on the Bridge.
The barriers, a combination of concrete and fencing, were designed and engineered by the West Gate Bridge Strengthening Alliance as part of the Bridge strengthening works. The installation of the temporary barriers should be finalised in the next two to three months.
The barriers will form the dual purpose of providing protection to construction personnel who will shortly be in, on and under the Bridge to undertake the strengthening.
The barriers, combined with increased security, increased CCTV coverage and improved co-ordination between emergency services, will improve public safety on the Bridge.
The permanent public safety barriers will be visible to the motoring public by mid 2010.
