CityLink is carrying out strengthening work on the elevated inbound section of the road, to cater for the projected future growth in the number and size of freight vehicles. For further details, read on.
This section begins from the eastern end of the Burnley and Domain tunnels, to where CityLink joins the Monash freeway just east of Glenferrie Road.
It includes the creation of an additonal lane of traffic in each direction, as well as the introduction of an intelligent freeway management system. The project has been designed to ensure minimal structural widening to lessen impact on the environment and adjoining landowners. The road will need to be widened by about 3.5 metres on the northern boundary of Southern Link, for a length of about 800 metres. It will occur on the curved section of elevated road over Gardiners Creek, in the vicinity of Scotch College and where the freeway crosses Glenferrie Road adjacent to HA Smith Reserve.
Other specific works include:
- realigning the median barrier and making better use of the existing roadway, so that an additional operating lane can be achieved on both sides
- reconstruction of the retaining wall east of Yarra Boulevard bridge, adjacent to outbound lanes
- reconstruction of some noisewalls predominantly on the northern side where the widening will take place
- building a new noisewall in the vicinity of HA Smith Reserve, where there is currently a small gap.
The Southern Link section is being delivered by an Alliance contract comprising of Abigroup, AECOM, and Transurban.
