Our environmental commitments

To minimise and avoid environmental impacts during construction a Project Environmental Protection Strategy (PEPS) has been adopted by all project partners and contractors.  The strategy identifies the environmental commitments the project agrees to meet as a result of the upgrade being built.

Environment and sustainability has been at the forefront of the planning, design and construction phases.  This assists the project to identify and manage any potential impacts.

Key project objectives for minimising the impact on the local environment include:

  • Minimising the removal of native vegetation and offsetting any impacted vegetation
  • Minimising the potential of dust and noise emissions caused by earthworks
  • Protecting stormwater runoff to into surrounding waterways such as Gardiners Creek, Scotsman Creek, and Dandenong Creek
  • Maximising water capture on site for reuse
  • Minimising waste sent to landfill

The project is working closely with various stakeholders and will continue to work with the local community.

Our environmental objectives

To manage potential environmental risks and make the most of our opportunities the M1 project will:

  • Comply with all the relevant environmental legislation and other relevant environmental standards and guidelines.
  • Work pro-actively with regulatory authorities, the community and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Be committed to prevention of pollution and minimise the adverse impacts of our activities on the environment.
  • Develop, implement and maintain Project Environment Protection Strategy.
  • Ensure that the design and construction phase of the M1 project promote the principles of sustainability by adopting the following:
  • Identify for use, materials that reduce demand on natural resources
  • Use of non-potable water (stormwater harvesting and use of recycled water)
  • Implement the waste hierarchy to the best of our ability
  • Identify and implement Water Sensitive Road Design initiatives
  • Implement Best Practice environmental management for construction activities
  • Identify and pursue environmental legacy outcomes for the community, proponents and the industry in general.
  • Continually improve environmental performance by periodically reviewing and evaluating our environmental policy, management systems and management plans to ensure that they are effective.
  • Promote environmental awareness among all employees and contractors to achieve the M1 project's objectives.
