Monash Freeway - Glenferrie Road to Warrigal Road

Work on the he section of the Monash Freeway between Glenferrie Road and Warrigal Road was undertaken by Monash Alliance, a collaborative teaming of VicRoads, Abigroup Contractors and Sinclair Knight Merz.

The upgrade of the Glenferrie Road - Warrigal Road section also included:

  • works on the pedestrian footbridges
  • upgrading and lengthening of some entry and exit ramps.

This section of the Monash Freeway upgrade was completed and an additional lane in both directions opened to traffic on 13 December 2009, coinciding with the commencement of operations of the overhead lane use management system between the CityLink tunnels and High Stret, Glen Iris.

 Express Lanes

This section also includes the introduction of “express lanes” on the Monash Freeway outbound carriageway.

The section of road over which the "express lanes" are signed, between Toorak Road and High Street, contains several closely spaced interchanges with many entering and exiting movements taking place.

As the entering and exiting traffic can slow down through traffic the two inner lanes (the express lanes) are intended to provide for through traffic travelling beyond High Street. The outer lanes are for drivers planning to exit at Toorak Road, Burke Road or High Street.  The choice of the term express lanes to convey the above intent was made after market research to test understanding of different terms.

Motorists will also notice a line delineating the express lanes from the outer lanes.  This is not a solid line and can be crossed, but is there to encourage drivers to choose and then stay in the appropriate lanes for their ultimate destination. During an incident resulting in lane closures, motorists may be directed via the overhead lane signs to cross these lines.

A similar treatment will be added to the Monash Freeway inbound carriageway once the additional lane opens in the CityLink section beyond Glenferrie Road, permitting the operation of two dedicated express lanes.
