Works for the section between Jacksons Road and the South Gippsland Freeway are being delivered by Fulton Hogan and involve:
- Constructing an additional lane in each direction. The extra lanes will be provided in the centre of the existing freeway, which means no land acquisition has been required on this section.
- Widening of the bridges at Jacksons Road, Police Road, Gladstone Road and Dandenong Creek
- Additional pier protection at several bridges
- Landscaping.
Initial site works began in February 2008 with major patching taking place from Stud Road to the South Gippsland Freeway.
Preparatory works also included resurfacing the emergency stopping lanes to form a temporary traffic lane that can be used by traffic while the new lanes are being constructed in the centre of the freeway.
Major construction works will then progressively take place in the centre median. Final resurfacing is underway for completion in early 2010.
The works occurred in two main stages:
|
Major construction
|
To ensure the safety of construction workers and road users, traffic barriers will be installed in the inner lanes to provide a safety buffer for workers. Traffic will use the resurfaced emergency shoulder as a third traffic lane with line marking to realign the traffic lanes.
Works will be undertaken in sections to minimise the total impacts to traffic.
Works will occur in the centre median area to construct the additional lane in each direction. Widening of the bridges will also take place at Jacksons Road, Police Road, Gladstone Road and Dandenong Creek;
|
|
Line marking, asphalting and finishing works
|
When the new lanes are constructed, asphalting and new line marking will take place. Traffic management will be removed and the new lane in each direction open to traffic.
Landscaping works will also occur at this time.
