CityLink is carrying out strengthening work on the elevated roads to cater for the projected future growth of commuters and in the number and size of freight vehicles. Whilst the work underneath the additional fourth lane inbound is required now, the majority of the work was planned for 2013, however CityLink decided to bring it forward to coincide with the M1 Upgrade.
The fourth lane will open by the end of this year, when strengthening works are completed. Virtually all the work is being carried out under the road to minimise disruption to traffic and is consequently out of sight to CityLink customers.
Whilst you cannot see any activity on the freeway, workers underneath the roadway are busy upgrading the steel and concrete structures so that are able to meet the increasing demands of freight and commuter traffic.
While we are doing this it is important to maintain a safe working environment for our workers. This is achieved by keeping vehicles away from the new fourth lane which will be restricted from use until completed.
This section of road is already running more smoothly since the opening of the new ramps on the west side of the Domain Tunnel.
