The West Gate Bridge is not only an iconic structure in Melbourne, it also forms a vital part of our transport system. The Monash-CityLink-West Gate project will include works to ensure the bridge can continue to play its role now and into the future.
Changes to the way the lanes on the bridge operate will be introduced so that an additional lane will be available for use in peak times to help traffic flow over the bridge. Prior to this, bridge strengthening works will be carried out so that it can cater for current and future traffic needs. This is in addition to the introduction of the freeway management system to help the bridge operate to its full potential.
The first stage of this project involves a structural analysis of the bridge and a thorough planning and design process. VicRoads has appointed world-renowned UK design specialist, the Flint & Neill Partnership, and local engineering firm, Sinclair Knight and Merz, to undertake this complex phase. Construction partner, John Holland joined the Alliance in mid 2008. This work was completed over a 14-month period and concluded in early 2009.
Major construction works to strengthen the bridge and increase peak-traffic capacity will commence in the first half of 2009, with the entire West Gate Bridge Strengthening Project scheduled for completion in 2011.
The animation below outlines the five lanes option from a driver's point of view and includes an artist's representation of what the public safety barriers might look like.
The West Gate Bridge section of the project is jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments.
